Megaflo in the Middle East

Heatrae Sadia's Megaflo Commercial unvented cylinders have been specified for the expansion of a prestigious sports hospital in Qatar in the Middle East

06 October 2014

Located in the Qatari capital city of Doha, Aspetar is a specialist orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital and the first of its kind to be built in the Gulf region. Originally constructed for the 2006 Asian Games hosted in the city, Aspetar now acts as a regional hub for sports medicine, and treats professional athletes from across the Middle East.

Facilities at the state-of-the-art hospital include four digital orthopaedic surgery theatres with capacity for two 25-bed wards, two hydrotherapy pools, 25 normobaric hypoxic rooms, which are en-suite rooms which allow athletes to spend time in a lower oxygen environment, a laboratory and pharmacy, as well as specialist rehabilitation equipment such as anti-gravity treadmills that use NASA technology to help athletes recover from injuries faster.

Heatrae Sadia Middle East Aspetar Sports Hospital InstallationWhen work began in early 2013 on the next phase of the Aspetar hospital development, the need for additional water heating was identified to provide fast-flowing showers for the changing areas of the new swimming pool. To meet the increased demand for hot water, the Qatari contractors on the project specified two Megaflo Commercial 500 litre cylinders through local Heatrae Sadia distributor UBMO-Mannai, a division of Mannai Trading.

A household name for many years in the UK, Heatrae Sadia has been establishing a reputation overseas for high-quality products at competitive prices. With the added reassurance of the products being manufactured in the United Kingdom, the Megaflo Commercial cylinders edged out competitor products to win the prestigious contract for the Aspetar project.

Megaflo Commercial unvented cylinders are available in sizes ranging from 400 to 2,500 litres, and can deliver working pressures of up to 10 bar. Made from high marine grade corrosion resistant stainless steel, the cylinders are hard-wearing with excellent strength to weight ratio, and offer high flow rates as well as industry-leading heat recovery times.

One major advantage of the Megaflo Commercial cylinder is its 100mm high-quality insulation, which ensures the highest heat retention. Energy efficiency is a big issue for Qatar, which has the third highest carbon footprint per capita in the world, so products which reduce energy usage are becoming increasingly sought-after. Competitor products common in the region typically have thinner layers of insulation; due to the hotter climate, the need for insulation is not considered essential. However a Megaflo retains its heat for longer because of it, which was another plus point for the brand.

Jon Cockburn, head of marketing at Heatrae Sadia, said: "At a time when emerging economies are taking an increasing share of the export market for manufactured goods, Heatrae Sadia is bucking the trend with growing sales in the Gulf region and beyond. We have found that customers still respect our 'Made in the UK' promise as a guarantee of high-quality engineering and innovation."

The construction project sector in the region is booming and, whilst it is undeniably competitive, there is a demand for the high-quality products we manufacture. We have secured a number of projects in the region and continue to work closely with our in-country distributors and industry professionals to deliver the excellent products and service we have become known for in the UK.”

Although in Qatar building regulations are not always as strict as in the UK, a lengthy and detailed approvals process is required whereby full technical specifications need to be provided and signed off by all parties including the local consultant, design consultant and MEP contractor. In addition, products need to comply with the country's marking requirements enforced by the authorities. Heatrae Sadia's distributors worked closely with the Aspetar project contractors and consultants to secure all the necessary approvals, making the specification and purchasing of the Megaflo Commercial cylinders as simple as possible.
